Restorative: having the ability to restore health, strength, or a feeling of well-being
I spent the day at Golden Years, our 70-bed facility in Hamilton, Ohio. I had the privilege of working with Keziah Hendricks, a restorative aide at the facility. This was my first time working in restorative, and I was quite impressed with Keziah and her passion for helping her residents continue to gain independence.
I asked Keziah how she liked being a restorative aide, she smiled, and said, “I love it! I love helping people.” Keziah went through the classes to become a dental hygienist but quickly realized that she wanted to be more involved with caring for people day-to-day. She became an STNA three year ago through the STNA classes at our sister facility Glenn Meadows and has loved every minute of it. Keziah’s passion for helping the residents and her upbeat attitude was noticed by her fellow staff members and she was recently recognized at the employee of the month.
Things haven’t always been easy for Keziah. In 2001, when she was six years old, her father was shot and killed breaking up a fight. Keziah’s hero was taken from her. As Keziah opened up about this devastating event in her life, she told me about her fondest memories of him. How he taught her how to ride a bike and taking her and her sister, Nadeige, swimming. With tears in her eyes, Keziah talked about how close she has become with her mom and sister through this devasting event. Keziah told me how strong of a woman her mom is and how she loves and looks up to her.
